Updates: Election Counting in Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland

GUWAHATI: The counting is underway for the state assemblies of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura amidst strict security protocol. And the final results of the counting have started coming in from multiple constituencies of the three states.

While the National People’s Party is leading in the state of Meghalaya till noon, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party is leading in the highest number of seats of the Nagaland assembly and the Bharatiya Janata Party is leading in multiple seats of the state of Tripura.

In the state of Meghalaya, the National People’s Party is preparing to form the government for the upcoming term as the party is in a good position in the elections. Four candidates from the party have been declared winners while the candidates of the party are said to be ahead in 22 more seats. With a lead in nine seats and a win in 1, the United Democratic Party is the next party in the line. The Trinamool Congress is leading in a total of 5 seats while the Bharatiya Janata Party is leading in three seats.

The state of Nagaland has broken its previous records and elected its first-ever female MLA. Hekani Jakhalu, the Nationalist Democratic  Progressive Party candidate for the Dimapur III constituency of the state defeated the Indian National Congress candidate for the constituency, V Lasuh. Her party has won five seats and leading in 22 more. Bharatiya Janata Party and the Republican Party of India (Athawale) have also won two seats each and so have one independent candidate.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has been maintaining the lead since the start of the counting of the votes. The party has already secured wins in four of its constituencies with Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha being one of the first to be declared the winner. Its alliance partner, the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura has also won one seat. The TIPRA Motha Party has also won one seat while leading in 11 more.
